Emerson Special Products Div (ESPD) has developed a wet and dry vacuum cleaner that can pick up 79 lbs of nails in one minute or a bushel of sawdust in 19.6 seconds. The technology is based on a switched reluctance drive. ESPD engineers used CAD simulations to model the control circuitry and the inertia of the motor. ESPD has also introduced a ceiling fan with a K55 motor that uses 2,244 ft of copper wire to ensure efficiency.

Switched reluctance motor expands the potential for workshop vacuum cleaner.

With more than 25 years of experience producing wet and dry workshop vacuums for Sears, Chicago, the Emerson Special Products Division (ESPD), St. Louis, recognized that the existing technology of universal motors has certain limitations that their customers would like to see addressed.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc (UL) evaluated several types of vacuum cleaners in response to recent speculations that the devices’ dust-collection bags allow dust back into the air after being processed. Dirt and debris filtering and storing in the appliance were considered.

UL created a technical advisory committee to formulate a consensus standard. A standard which addresses all environmental effects from a vacuum-cleaner operation was proposed.

Proposed standard targets clean air coupled with clean carpets.

Recently, there has been a trend in the vacuum-cleaner industry towards improving efficiency. This trend has been predicated on the perception that dust-collection bags allow dust back into the air after being processed by the vacuum cleaner.

Vacuum cleaner sales are outselling other small appliances and the market is still growing. For example, 1992 vacuum cleaner sales totaled a record 11.7 million full-size units, and Jan 1993 sales increased 26.4% over Jan 1992 levels to 1.1 million units. Industry experts attribute the rise to several factors, including growth in the housing market and the aging of US consumers.

Cleaners top rest of small appliances, but even greater growth envisioned as economy rises

Vacuum cleaner out-performed the rest of the small-appliance industry on average and could be on the verge of dramatic growth as the economy turns around.

Don’t Compute In A Vacuum Cleaner

One day, an executive with an eye on higher efficiency and cleaner floors purchased one vacuum cleaner, two computers, one database management system, and one program for word processing and a variety of other uses.

The vacuum cleaner, when pulled from its box and plugged into the electrical socket, immediately began its work. The computers and programs were another story.

A computer is not a vacuum cleaner. You can’t just plug it in, flip the switch, and put it to productive work.

The tip-off that you must expect to spend some time experimenting comes when you see the “owner’s manual’ that accompanies a computer and its programs.

Would you buy a vacuum cleaner from this man? How about a needleless insulin injection system? Flight instructions?

Gary W. Moore of Moore Industries Inc. (MII) in Bradley, Illinois, is betting that people will. And he’s betting that they’ll buy it face-to-face, in their homes, from a direct salesperson.

And that’s not the only thing that suggests there’s something a little off-center about Moore, something out of the fifties, perhaps, before the retail revolution that brought about the shopping mall and discount chains like Wal-Mart and Kmart and put the Fuller Brush Man out of business.

FISHY FILTER CLAIMS

As filtering becomes more important to consumers buying vacuum cleaners, some claims for how well these machines perform that function are getting rather inflated.

For example, one company claims its machine has a filtration efficiency of 99.9796%, very close to HEPA standards for capture rate.

But this efficiency rating does not mention what size particle it refers to. In fact, it may even refer to weight.

Since larger particles are the heaviest, a filter could allow all particles smaller than a few micron to pass through and still capture 99.97% of particles by weight.
